The Meta key (typically Alt) may be bound to key strokes, as opposed to the menu short-cut from the user-setup(3) as follows:-
Help -> User Setup -> General -> Alt -> Main Menu = N
Help -> User Setup -> General -> Alt -> Esc Prefix = Y
